Confessions of a Colorist: My Cozy, Spooky Secrets
Share
Okay, confession time! For the longest time, I thought Halloween coloring had to be dark and a little creepy. But the truth is, a haunted house that's all dusty grays and browns just isn't my peaceful escape. I had a moment of clarity when I decided to just embrace the whimsical, mischievous side of the season! I realized Halloween coloring is a whole lot more fun when you're not afraid of things that go bump in the night.
I discovered that the secret to a silly, spooky page is all in the magic you create. I start by choosing a color palette that's more fun than frightening. Think vibrant pinks, bright teals, and even some unexpected rainbow patterns! I use these colors to give my ghouls and monsters big, goofy personalities. It’s so fun to make a zombie a total fashionista or a friendly little ghost that looks like a fluffy marshmallow.
And the best part? I bring that same playful magic to the whole scene! I create a night sky that looks like a whimsical potion, blending deep purples and midnight blues to create a mysterious atmosphere. Then, I'll add tiny, sparkling points of light to make the moon and stars glow. It turns a haunted house in the background into an enchanted place that feels more magical than scary.
And that was it! I learned that by just bringing a little playfulness to my pages, I could turn even the most "spooky" designs into a cozy, creative adventure.
If you need the perfect pages for your spooky scenes, keep an eye out—I'm so excited to announce that a brand new Halloween book is coming soon! You can find all of my other books, including digital and softcover options, right here on my website.
Happy coloring, everyone! 🎨
