Confessions of a Colorist: My Not-So-Secret Philosophy

Confessions of a Colorist: My Not-So-Secret Philosophy

Okay, confession time! I was just sitting here with a fresh coloring page and a cup of coffee, and I got to thinking about all the things that used to go through my head when I was just starting out with this hobby. You know those questions you're too afraid to ask? Like, what do you even do when you mess up? Or how do you know what colors to pick? I figured you and I might have a lot in common, so let’s talk!

First, let's get something out of the way: I don't believe in mistakes! My coloring is my peaceful escape, so I refuse to let a slip of a pen or a wrong color ruin the moment. I've found that sometimes, the most beautiful pages are the ones created from what we thought were "mistakes." It's all part of the happy, messy process.

Then there's the question of choosing colors. Honestly, my biggest secret is that I try not to overthink it! My color choices are highly dependent on my mood. When I'm feeling a little stuck, I look around for inspiration—at the clothes I'm wearing, the colors outside my window, or even my dogs! But most of the time, I just follow my heart and pick the colors that feel right in that moment. Coloring is all about what makes you happy, and the same goes for your color choices!

And finally, the dreaded creative block. Oh, yes, as a colorist, I definitely have those days where I just don't feel inspired. When that happens, I don't force it. I put my tools down, step away, and do something else that brings me joy. My biggest tip is to not let a creative block get you down. It’s a natural part of the creative process, and a little break is often all you need to come back refreshed and full of new ideas!

I hope this little chat was helpful! If you're looking for the perfect page to get settled in with, you can find a wide variety of designs, styles, and skill levels in my books, available for both digital and softcover download right here on my website.

Happy coloring, everyone! 🎨
